I always thought that they blew snow in big mounds becasue it would survive the upcoming thaw or big winds better. After the thaw or winds they then smooth it out.
If it's not about to thaw or have big winds it doesn't make sense other than to not have the snow makers out on the hill so often which is sort of lame.
